What's the difference between pornography and art? (Or so the joke goes.) The lighting. Groan-inducing as that is, lighting makes a world of difference; an ordinary landscape can become quite dramatic, a portrait can become quite stunning and an architectural shot can become a lot more imposing.
Once a placid sky, clouds roll in, the sun starts setting, and the interplay of light and shadows make the whole scenery is much more epic. The mix of light and shadows is basically what creates a film noir and simple black and white shots are made or broken by the way light falls on the subject, or background (or doesn't fall on those things). In these shots, the subject is less important, and the overall impression takes centre stage.
Here are the subjects of today's pictures.
Frank
His note: One-second time exposure of lights on a Blue Spruce with a circular motion. Interesting effect I think.
Shannon
Her note: Mmmmm summer lemonade with 5 shots.
My picture
Leaving work today the clouds looked pretty interesting. It's like they're moving pretty quickly towards the camera. Again, the field of view is too narrow, because there was more of this type of thing on the left and right of frame.
I'm thinking of lugging my 7D around with me to work tomorrow. We'll see how that works out.
